Media Vaulting

A media vault is a fire rated and climate controlled enclosure for hosting media that is more sensitive to temperature and humidity variations. It provides services called offsite data protection. Typically a media vault operates by helping clients rotate sets of data tapes or other types of backup media from their own data center to a secure offsite location (the media vault). This rotation is typically recurring, although media vaults are also used for tape libraries.

In a media vault environment special fire protection systems are frequently used and careful monitoring of temperature and humidity conditions are employed both at the media vault, itself, and when items are in transit to and from the client facility. Disaster recovery and business continuity are primary reasons for offsite media vaulting.
